Stallone hits the art scene in St Moritz
Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone may be known for his action movies, but a gallery in St Moritz is showing, for the first time, his other side – the artist.
Galerie Gmurzynska is hosting a retrospective of works by the star of Rambo and Rocky, made up of around 30 pictures, including self portraits, painted over the past 35 years.
The gallery describes Stallone’s style as action-packed: colourful, abstract and expressive. Most pictures are up for sale and have already found buyers, the gallery told the Swiss News Agency. They cost $50,000-$150,000 (SFr48,000- SFr143,000).
Galerie Gmurzynska had already shown eight of the actor’s works in its booth at the Art Basel Miami Beach in 2009. This led to the show in the exclusive Swiss mountain resort, which runs from February 18 to March 15.
Speaking at a news conference ahead of the opening, 64-year-old Stallone said that painting meant the freedom to be himself.
The star said he had chosen St Moritz over places like New York because he wanted his art to be the focus. He sees his style as in the tradition of European 20th century art.
