Hello and greetings from Aquitaine, or the southwest of France.
Gerda and I are a couple who have fulfilled their dream of buying an old stone house with a large barn and a small barn, far from the hustle and bustle of consumerism. We love historic buildings and are located in the middle of the Coeur des Bastides. Our house stands on a land area of 1.8 HA. This was a hard compromise we had to make when looking for a house. The land was hardly planted. In the 3 1/2 years we have been here, we have planted about 250 young trees and bushes. Besides a permaculture fruit tree garden surrounded by wild hedges, we also planted a corner with normal native forest trees. In addition, a park was created with many wildflowers, shrubs and trees as well as a dry stone wall seating area. We have 3 rooms and a holiday apartment, a pool and a petangue. Close by is a small lake with a simple yet stylish restaurant. In the nearby village of Cancon there is another restaurant with upscale cuisine and yet also a family atmosphere. We are also 10 minutes from Monflanquin and between 20 and 40 minutes from various beautiful chateaus. The proximity to the Dordogne is another plus point for those who still need the tourist hustle and bustle a bit. Breakfast is included and our breakfast has an excellent reputation. We also do table d' hôte (dinner) in our company on request. We offer rather international dishes with local products, to a large extent even from our garden. We take full advantage of the numerous local weekly markets and procure most of our food through them.
This year, for the first time, things have already gone really well. Not at our capacity limit by a long shot, of course. But we were very satisfied. It was good for us not to be at full capacity right away which was very good for our guests. The ratings on our Google account speak for themselves, and of course that's thanks to the fact that we really like doing it. We think that 2021 will be much more complicated if the vaccination rate remains in the current range. The good thing is that we can hope for many local guests in the meantime, as long as domestic travel is not explicitly restricted.

Hallo und herzliche Grüsse aus der Aquitaine, bzw. dem Südwesten Frankreichs.
Gerda und ich sind ein Paar, welches sich den Traum erfüllt hat, fernab der Hektik und dem Konsumzwang, ein altes Steinhaus mit einer grossen und einer kleinen Scheune zu erstehen. Wir lieben historische Gebäude und befinden uns inmitten der Coeur des Bastides. Unser Haus steht auf einer Landfläche von 1,8 HA. Dies war dann auch bei der Haussuche ein harter Kompromiss, welchen wir eingehen mussten. Das Land war nämlich kaum bepflanzt. In den nun gut 3 1/2 Jahren die wir nun hier sind, haben rund 250 Jungbäume und Sträucher gepflanzt. Nebst einem Permakultur Fruchtbaumgarten umrandet von Wildhecken wurde auch eine Ecke mit normalen heimischen Waldbäumen gepflanzt. Zudem wurde ein Park angelegt mit vielen Wildblumen, Sträuchern und Bäumen sowie einem Trockenmauer-Sitzplatz. Wir haben 3 Zimmer und eine Ferienwohnung, einen Pool und eine Petanguebahn. In unmittelbarer Nähe befindet sich ein kleiner See mit einem einfachen und trotzdem stilvollen Restaurant. Im Nahen Ort Cancon befindet ein weiteres Restaurant mit gehobener Küche und trotzdem auch familiärem Ambiente. Wir sind zudem 10 Minuten von Monflanquin und zwischen 20 und 40 Minuten von diversen, wunderschönen Chateaus entfernt. Die Nähe zur Dordogne ist ein weiterer Pluspunkt für diejenigen, die den Tourismustrubel dennoch ein wenig brauchen. Frühstück ist inbegriffen und unser Frühstück geniesst einen ausgezeichneten Ruf. Auf Wunsch machen wir auch Table d' hôte (Abendessen) in unserer Gesellschaft. Wir bieten dabei eher internationale Gerichte mit lokalen Produkten, weitgehend sogar aus unserem Garten, an. Die zahlreichen lokalen Wochenmärkte kosten wir vollends aus und beschaffen den grössten Teil unserer Lebensmittel über diese.
Diese Jahr lief es zum ersten Mal bereits richtig gut. Natürlich noch lange nicht an unserer Auslastungsgrenze. Aber wir waren sehr zufrieden. War gut für uns, nicht sofort voll ausgelastet zu sein was unseren Gästen sehr zu Gute kam. Die Bewertungen auf unserem Google-Account sprechen für sich, und das natürlich auch nur dank der Tatsache, dass wir es wirklich gern machen. Wir denken das 2021 wesentlich komplizierter werden wird, wenn die Impfgeschwindigkeit im aktuellen Rahmen bleibt. Gut ist, dass wir mittlerweile auf viele einheimische Gäste hoffen können, sofern die Inlandsreisen nicht explizit eingeschränkt werden.

We live, for some years also abroad. The pandemic also affects us. But we have always baked small rolls and have never dreamed of running a luxury resort for Europeans or other well-heeled people. We have always focused on the local market. Everything we have created, we have financed ourselves without outside help, without loans or anything else. This keeps the fixed costs very low. Furthermore, we have diversified from the very beginning. We never wanted to stand on one leg only! But these are all simple principles that anyone who understands business management should have in mind. And you should have a fundamental knowledge of business management when you set yourself up as an entrepreneur. Otherwise you are hopelessly dependent on luck.
Our whole life is diversified. So even today I have the opportunity to work in Switzerland for a while and earn money that we can reinvest in our projects back home. Building bridges instead of tearing them down.
We run a small resort that appeals to the local audience. Not a beach resort like there are hundreds of them everywhere. But also here, off the beaten track! And it works. Even in the current pandemic crisis that has hit our country very hard. The resort feeds several local families. But it will never, ever make us financially rich. But it makes us extremely happy and we are grateful for all that.
Wir wohnen, seit einigen Jahren auch im Ausland. Auch die Pandemie betrifft uns. Aber wir haben immer kleine Brötchen gebacken und haben nie davon geträumt, ein Luxusresort für Europäer oder andere Betuchte zu führen. Wir haben uns immer auf den lokalen Markt konzentriert. Alles was wir geschaffen haben, haben wir selber finanziert ohne fremde Hilfe, ohne Kredite oder Sonstiges. Das hält die Fixkosten sehr tief. Im Weiteren haben wir uns schon von Anfang an diversifiziert. Wir wollten nie nur auf einem Bein stehen! Aber das sind alles simple Grundsätze, die jeder, der etwas von Betriebswirtschaft versteht, intus haben sollte. Und von Betriebswirtschaft sollte man fundamentale Kenntnisse haben, wenn man sich als UnternehmerIn aufstellt. Ansonsten ist man hoffnungslos vom Glück abhängig.
Unser ganzes Leben ist diversifiziert. So habe ich auch heute die Möglichkeit, für eine Weile in der Schweiz zu arbeiten und Geld zu verdienen, das wir Zuhause wieder in unsere Projekte reinvestieren können. Brücken aufbauen anstatt abreissen.
Wir betreiben ein kleines Resort, dass das lokale Publikum anspricht. Kein Beach Resort wie es zu Hunderten überall gibt. Sondern auch hier, off the beaten track! Und es läuft. Auch in der aktuellen Pandemie Krise die auch unser Land sehr hart getroffen hat. Das Resort ernährt mehrere lokale Familien. Aber es wird uns nie und nimmer finanziell reich machen. Aber es macht uns extrem glücklich und wir sind dankbar für all das.

I do not work in the tourism sector, but I live just behind four star hotels in Lombok, Indonesia. Some hotels are closed, others keep open, but at an occupancy rate of between 5 and 20 percent (on holidays). Rates have been slashed down by between 50 and 75 percent. Four Star Hotels now offer rates lower than my AirBnb rate used to be. International staff have either been terminated or salaries reduced to 1/3. Some with national staff, some hotels closed totally while the ones being kept open reduced salaries to 1/3. Salaries in 'good days' were not high. 1/3 is below sustainable levels. We see some initiatives. Some national staff were able to 'diversify' and find small business opportunities. One junior chef now deals with chilies in the local market. Others try their luck in fishing, to get some food on the table. But most suffer one way or the other. Those neighbors who did not work in the hotels made their income in 'beach trade'. With just a few national tourists the income plummeted here also. - Personally I think there was no need to totally halt international tourism. All arrivals need a negative virus test, so what is the problem? Let all who want to come come ! What is the negative test for ?
the tourism industry is over. between all the unemployed, the upcoming vaccine passports, all the fear of going somewhere and bring a virus that will kill your family there is no more tourism. the closest thing to tourism is buying a home in a different part of the country and sharing it with friends for long weekends. you drive, you cook and you don't spend anything

I work as a guide in polar regions and my job opportunities in this sector dropped to zero since the beginning of pandemics. Whole seasons were cancelled (so far summer 2020 and winter 2020/2021). Since tourists come from all over the world it is literally impossible to manage the situation in other way but by cancelling the trips. I still work in other sectors, however, the cancellations caused a significant drop in my income, and since I work as self-employed, and since the employer is not Swiss, I cannot count on any sort of help.
Thank you for your answer and sorry to hear the impact the pandemic has had on your life. May I ask what other sectors you work in now?
If all hospitality venues renamed themselves as "The Ski Resort", would they be allowed to stay open? The GB strain of the virus appeared in Wengen, and they had to cancel a ski competition. Which is a good thing. Why should skiing continue when other sport is banned? It's the same in the UK with top level football. Lockdown means lockdown. No exceptions apart from essential workers.
Yesterday I was surprised to see a post bus marked ski bus in our small town centre. Around the square were milling small groups of people who I afterwards realised were parents. The bus was full of children and they and their escorts came pouring off the bus.
It was quite cute to see all the small skis on the back of the bus as I have always previously seen them with longer adult ones, and particularly in the good old days of much longer skis.
Well the small skies are kids not studying, instead its ski time. A Monday morning after Christmas holidays, the kids are on the pistes. In the Swiss romandie part they do not even speak English. This will be the new crowed of unemployed, taxes will have to be higher to fed them with beer and tobacco.

Since 2009 we definitely live here on the oldest Azorean island Santa Maria, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. We run the small bed and breakfast "Pensão Francisca" and are also the first certified organic farmers of the island since 3 years, specialized in exotic tropical fruits. It was not planned that way at all - we just slipped into it. At that time we had filled a gap in the market with room rentals, our idea was to become as self-sufficient as possible. That's why we provided ourselves with vegetables and fruits, clearly without chemicals. Word got around and so we were motivated to do a bit more ...

Wir leben seit 2009 definitiv hier auf der ältesten Azoren-Insel Santa Maria, mitten im Atlantik. Wir betreiben die kleine Frühstücks-Pension «Pensão Francisca» und sind nebenbei seit 3 Jahren auch noch die ersten zertifizierten Bio-Bauern der Insel, spezialisiert auf exotische tropische Früchte. Es war zwar überhaupt nicht so geplant – da sind wir rein gerutscht. Damals hatten wir eine Marktlücke mit der Zimmervermietung ausgefüllt, unsere Idee war, möglichst autark zu werden. Deshalb haben wir uns selbst versorgt mit Gemüse und Früchten, klar ohne Chemie. Das hat sich rum gesprochen und so wurden wir motiviert ein bisschen mehr zu tun …

I've been in Canada since 1998
( Québec) and work independently. The first 7 years we ran a B&B. After we had a lot of success we built a bigger house and rented 5 rooms.
After 14 years again a new building, new concept new location and that directly at the entrance Park Jacques-Cartier.
September 2018 start the construction of an Auberge . End of March 2019 opening, bad luck covid-19 and I had to close the doors . To date no help from the state and there were and still are very difficult times coming my way .
May open since mid summer , but only accept a couple or 1 family .
(the income is not even enough to cover the expenses).
What else can I do but hang in there and hope for better times.
Hopefully they will come soon!
Wishes all those in this time to fight for their future, much hold out fortune, head up it will already.

September 2018 beginn der Bau einer Auberge . Ende März 2019 Eröffnung, Pech gehabt covid-19 und ich musste die Türen schliessen . Bis heute keine hilfe vom Staat und es gab und gibt noch sehr schwierig Zeiten die auf mich zukommen.
Darf seit Mitte Sommer geöffnet haben , aber nur ein Paar oder 1 Familie annehmen.

Was bleibt mir übrig als durch zu halten und auf besser Zeiten hoffen.

My name is Rita Fäh, I have been living in Málaga, Andalusia since 1993.
In January 2002 I opened my language school, Instituto Andalusi de Español. Since then we have been offering people from all over the world the opportunity to learn the Spanish language.
The pandemic hit us very hard because we are 100 percent dependent on foreign countries.
My great hope was that somehow it would continue when we reopened the school on July 1, 2020, with all the observances of health and hygiene rules, spacing and wearing masks. Hope evaporated in August when Spain was classified as a risk area. All reservations from August to the present have been cancelled.

Mein Name ist Rita Fäh, ich lebe seit 1993 in Málaga, Andalusien.
Im Januar 2002 habe ich meine Sprachschule, Instituto Andalusi de Español, eröffnet. Seitdem bieten wir Menschen aus allen Ländern der Welt die Möglichkeit, die spanische Sprache zu erlernen.
Die Pandemie hat uns sehr stark getroffen, da wir 100 Prozent vom Ausland abhängig sind.
Meine grosse Hoffnung war, dass es irgenwie weitergeht, als wir am 1.7.2020 die Schule wieder eröffnet haben, mit allen Einhaltungen der Gesundheits-und Hygieneregeln, Abstand und Masken tragen. Die Hoffnung verflog im August als Spanien als Risikogebiet eingestuft wurde. Alle Reservierungen ab August bis zum heutigen Tag wurden storniert.
