Every year, on the fourth Monday in November, the city of Bern celebrates the ordinary onion. The burghers of Bern have been buying their bulbs in bulk at the onion market since the 15th century. This year 60 tons of them - wrapped into the traditional wreaths – were strung out across the old town. Adults tend to fortify themselves with an onion tart and a cup of mulled wine, while the local children – freed from school for the day – charge about scattering confetti and bashing tourists and locals on the head with plastic hammers. swissinfo.ch
