Stocks Get Tech Boost as Anthropic Files for IPO: Markets Wrap
(Bloomberg) — A revival of the artificial-intelligence trade fueled gains in stocks as Anthropic PBC filed for an IPO, with investors bracing for this week’s results from tech giants and the Federal Reserve decision.
The S&P 500 halted back-to-back losses. High-profile chipmakers rallied, sending a closely watched industry gauge up 2.8%. The Nasdaq 100 rose 1.1%. In a volatile session, Brent crude settled near $116. Brazilian markets tumbled as President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was re-elected, fueling fears that fiscal issues in Latin America’s largest economy will worsen.

Anthropic’s initial public offering will be a key test of AI sentiment after optimism surrounding the technology helped power a four-year bull market in stocks. The company behind Claude expects to begin trading on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol ANT, a filing showed.
“ANT has clearly rekindled the sort of enthusiasm for all things AI-related that had been missing from the market’s zeitgeist for the past few weeks,” said Steve Sosnick at Interactive Brokers. “This IPO will be an important test of the market’s attitudes and appetites.”
Major AI spenders Alphabet Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Amazon.com Inc. are expected to show healthy growth when they report earnings this week. Wall Street will be interested in comments on how much they plan to spend on AI and the degree to which those investments are proving to be profitable.
“The big focus is what these companies expect to spend on AI going forward and whether this spending can continue to be financed by cash flows, or if equity and debt issuance will be necessary,” said Richard Saperstein at Treasury Partners.
Meantime, Kevin Warsh will face a familiar challenge if the Fed holds rates steady: He must reassure investors the central bank is committed to quashing inflation while explaining why officials chose not to raise rates.
“We don’t expect a Fed rate hike on Wednesday, as the bond market has already tightened credit conditions since the Fed’s last meeting,” said Saperstein. “We expect to hear tough talk on the inflation front combined with soft action.”
With policymakers responding primarily to energy-driven inflation pressures and currency dynamics rather than a materially overheating economy, this is likely to be a relatively shallow tightening cycle, according to Seema Shah at Principal Asset Management.
The Fed is likely to deliver a hike in December and another one in 2027, she added.
Corporate Highlights:
SpaceX signed a roughly $40 billion equipment-finance lease with Apollo Global Management Inc. to pay for the chips needed to fuel its AI ambitions. Meta Platforms Inc. is seeking to raise as much as $95 billion from selling common and preferred stock, supporting its development in AI with one of the largest equity offerings in history. The iPhone Duo, one of Apple Inc.’s biggest new products in years, is drawing a growing number of complaints from customers who say the foldable display cracked after just hours or days of use. Microsoft Corp. will offer buyouts to about 60,000 workers, part of the company’s efforts to trim costs and retool its workforce for the AI era. Tesla Inc. analysts are rapidly turning more bullish on the electric-vehicle maker as a long awaited combination with SpaceX edges closer to reality. The share of bearish calls on the stock has sunk to the lowest in more than 11 years. Some of the main moves in markets:
