Stocks Tick Higher Ahead of ECB, Tech Earnings: Markets Wrap
(Bloomberg) — US stocks futures snapped a three-day losing streak and Treasuries steadied, though risk appetite remained firmly in check ahead of big tests including tech earnings and an interest rate decision in Europe.
S&P 500 contracts rose 0.2%, cutting losses for the week to less than 1%. Brent held above $101 a barrel as Iran signaled it was preparing for an intensifying war. Shorter-dated Treasuries edged higher as traders waited for the latest print on US factory prices. The dollar barely budged.
Investors are bracing for a busy day, with a packed calendar that could set the pace for markets. First up is the latest European Central Bank rate decision, with a hike already priced in and the focus instead on guidance.
Earnings from Oracle Corp. after the close will offer a fresh read on the outlook for artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, the August producer price index could offer clues on the course of inflation for the rest of the year and what it means for monetary policy.
“Today’s PPI report matters, but probably not enough on its own to change the Fed’s decision next week,” said Santiago Mateo Yanguas at CaixaBank AM. “That said, a significant upside or downside surprise could still move markets today by shifting expectations for the rate path beyond the next meeting, particularly in Treasury yields and interest rate-sensitive sectors.”
Markets largely shrugged off President Donald Trump’s promise to give all adult US citizens a $5,000 dividend if Republicans retain control of both houses of Congress.
“Trump’s US$5,000 may grab headlines, but the market’s real focus right now is on how the US Treasury buyback performs later today and what US CPI has in store for markets tomorrow,” said Prashant Newnaha, at TD Securities in Singapore.
