Swiss Electricity Prices Will Drop 4% Next Year, Regulator Says

(Bloomberg) — Electricity prices in Switzerland will drop by about 4% from January as local utility companies pass on cheaper wholesale costs to consumers.

The median power price for a typical household will fall to 0.265 francs ($0.327) per kilowatt-hour, about 0.012 francs less than this year, the Swiss Federal Electricity Commission said Tuesday in a statement.

The current sharp increase in wholesale prices due to the Iran war is barely noticeable in structured procurement for 2027, and might only make an impact in following years, the regulator said.

The drop in consumers’ bills will weigh on Switzerland’s already low inflation rate. While August saw an acceleration to 0.8% because of rising global energy prices, economists reckon that increase may prove temporary. The Swiss National Bank has kept interest rates at zero for more than a year.

Under domestic regulations, utility companies in the country can adjust consumer power prices only once at the beginning of each year. Electricity prices had already dropped some 4% this year.
