Former Algerian general detained in Geneva

A former Algerian defence minister, Khaled Nezzar, has reportedly been detained for questioning by Geneva’s justice authorities.

The Swiss human rights group, Track Impunity Always (Trial), said Nezzar had been arrested on Thursday over torture allegations.

The group said he was later released, pending further legal procedures against the 73-year-old general and member of Algeria’s former ruling military government in the early 1990ies.

Nezzar has been accused by human rights groups and dissident Algerian officers of inciting and committing massacres, torture and other inhumane treatment.
