The fear factor
Tension is rising in the razor-thin race for the White House – even in Switzerland. Swiss-based political activists say it could be a nail-biter until the end.
Maya Samara, Chair of Democrats Abroad Switzerland (3,000 members), says she is very nervous:
“There is always that anxiety about how the American people will vote. I feel the US has become so divided that people really have completely different ways of thinking and they don’t cross paths so much. They watch different news and read different newspapers and don’t socialize as frequently so they can’t fathom who these other people are who think differently.”
Edward Patrick Flaherty, co-chairman of Republicans Abroad Switzerland (250 members), says he is also more anxious since the superstorm Sandy hit the US:
“The Hurricane has changed things a bit, lessening Romney’s momentum. I was more confident at the end of last week; it’s going to be extremely close. I don’t think we’re going to know until late on Wednesday morning.”
