Public service workers have gone on strike in canton Vaud in protest at the local government’s proposed cutbacks in social services. Reports say the strike is being widely followed by members of the two unions involved.
Hospitals, schools, public services and prisons were expected to be hit by the one-day action. A picket has been mounted outside the main hospital in Lausanne.
Members of two unions are taking part in the strike, and are calling for new talks with the cantonal government.
The two unions are angry with a third union, which has signed an agreement with the authorities.
Strike action in the past has forced the authorities in Vaud to re-think their policies.
On two occasions in the past two years, demonstrations by public service workers have successful.
Another demonstration is planned for later in the day in Lausanne.
