Federer starts well at Monte Carlo

Roger Federer has won his first match on clay this year, beating Andreas Seppi of Italy in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters on Wednesday.

Federer, the world number two, beat Seppi in two straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. It was his third win against the Italian this year.

“I am very happy to have won my first match on clay,” he said afterwards. “It takes some time to adjust to the surface, the rebounds and the sliding.”

Federer is now set to meet another Swiss player, Stanislas Wawrinka, in the third round on Thursday.

The Swiss star, who had a disappointing season in 2008, did not originally plan to play at Monte Carlo this year, but accepted a last-minute wild card invitation last week. He is a three-time finalist at the tournament but has never won.

The world number one, Rafael Nadal, is hoping to win his fifth straight Monte Carlo title.
