Cybercrime reports on the rise

Reports of cybercrime went up by around 1,000 among Swiss users last year compared with 2008.

Of the 7,541 internet-related instances reported in 2009, the majority dealt with pornography and spam. The number of complaints about hardcore pornography rose the most dramatically to 1,364 while those related to spam remained stable at 1,496.

Fraud cases nearly doubled to 354 and mainly involved fake apartments and classified advertisements online.

The Swiss Coordination Unit for Cybercrime Control opened investigations into 155 cases in 2009, 29 more than the previous year. Information gathered from peer-to-peer networks where users exchanged pornographic material was sent to the police in the cantons concerned.

Authorities said a partnership with the Italian anti-child abuse organisation Telefono Arcobaleno had helped track down 7,300 websites containing pornographic material that was hosted by Swiss internet service providers, without their knowledge. The banned material was later removed.
