The fight against new nuclear power plants had historically been part and parcel of the party’s political identity, president Ueli Leuenberger said.
He said parliament would take important decisions on the future of nuclear energy in Switzerland during the next four-year term as the major energy companies have applied for the construction of two new plants.
“Every vote for the Greens is a vote against new nuclear power stations,” Leuenberger told a news conference on Tuesday.
The complete election platform which includes boosting energy efficiency, will officially be launched at a meeting of party delegates next Saturday.
Leuenberger said the party was aiming to take more than ten per cent of the vote in October but conceded it would be difficult to achieve the target.
In 2007 the party won 9.6 per cent of the vote – an increase of more than two per cent – and currently has 22 seats in parliament. It is the largest group which is not represented in the cabinet.
