Swiss aid begins to arrive in Haiti

The first of several Swiss relief teams has arrived in Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital, officials said on Friday.

A second team would arrive later on Friday, said Toni Frisch, the head of the humanitarian aid unit at the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

A third aircraft carrying medical specialists and 33 tons of relief supplies is also scheduled to leave Switzerland on Friday, the foreign ministry said, followed by a second relief flight on Sunday.

Swiss authorities have been in contact with 87 of the 178 Swiss nationals registered in Haiti, they said. No Swiss casualties have been reported.

The foreign ministry has also strengthened its presence at the embassy in Port-au-Prince. The hotline for missing relatives is +41 31 325 33 33.
