Swiss citizens advised to leave Egypt

The Swiss government says all Swiss residing in Egypt should leave the country, at least temporarily, due to the unrest there.

The foreign ministry also extended its travel advisory on Sunday to warn people against travelling to the country. On Friday, it had only said large Egyptian cities should be avoided.

According to the Swiss embassy in Cairo, 1,574 Swiss are registered as residing in Egypt. These citizens are being asked to inform the embassy of their departure plans.

The embassy said it would have a member of staff at Cairo airport on Monday, after the end of the curfew at 8am local time, to assist Swiss citizens.

Unlike some other countries, the Swiss government is not ordering an evacuation of its people, or organising special flights to take them home.

Three of the largest Swiss tour operators, Kuoni, Tui Suisse and Hotelplan, say there are around 1,500 Swiss tourists in Egypt at the moment, mostly staying at Red Sea resorts.

The companies said if there was enough demand from their customers to return to Switzerland, special flights would be arranged.
