Swiss journalists under siege in Egypt

A Swiss journalist from the Fribourg newspaper La Liberté has been reported missing in Egypt.

The reporter, who arrived in Cairo on Sunday, has not been heard from since Wednesday.

As the newspaper announced on Thursday evening, the man was able to inform his family of his arrest on Wednesday. It has informed the Swiss Embassy in Cairo of the situation.

In addition, a correspondent from Ticino’s radio and television company was attacked near his Cairo hotel on Thursday. He was apparently beaten up by followers of Egyptian President Husni Mubarak.

His equipment was thrown onto the ground and members of the military had to rescue him.

Meanwhile, a Belgian journalist who writes for the Geneva-based newspaper Le Temps has been freed. He had been kidnapped on Wednesday afternoon.

The Swiss government has said that all Swiss residing in Egypt should leave the country, at least temporarily, due to the unrest there.

On Sunday, the foreign ministry extended its travel advisory to warn people against travelling to the country.
