Union group wants to preserve Swiss workplaces

Union federation Travail Suisse has called on parliament to accept the government’s proposed package to help counteract the negative impact of the strong Swiss franc.

Travail Suisse delegates, gathered at their annual conference in Bern on Saturday, say that the package would help support Swiss workplaces.

The umbrella organisation, which represents some 170,000 workers, also prepared a manifesto with ten theories on how demographics affect the labour market.

Travail Suisse argues that Switzerland needs especially good working conditions in order to overcome demographic challenges like the lack of young employees to take the place of those retiring.

“Today we can already see that demographic trends are hitting the labour market with full force,” said Travail Suisse president Martin Flügel.

The organisation also called on employers to be more age- and family-friendly.

Based on a study it commissioned this past spring, Travail Suisse predicted that Switzerland would be short 400,000 workers by 2030.
