Hingis knocked out of US Open

Hingis struggled to match the power of her opponent Keystone

Swiss world number one Martina Hingis has been knocked out of the US Open after losing in straight sets to America's Serena Williams.

Williams powered her way through a quick, 51-minute match to erase Hingis with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat and set up a dramatic final against her elder sister Venus.

The American’s hard-hitting game at times seemed to wear the Swiss out and it wan’t until the eighth game of the opening set that Hingis was able to hold her own serve. Williams had 9 winners to just three for Hingis, with the American delivering five aces.

In the second set, Williams served up much of the same, with solid returns down the line. Hingis’s attempts to come on the offensive and head up to the net proved fruitless as the 10th seed powered shots passed her.

Overall Williams hit 40 winners for the match compared to just five for Hingis and completed the victory with her 10th ace.

Hingis is experiencing a Grand Slam drought, having last won a major tournament in Australia in 1999. Friday’s defeat stretched her slump to 11 Grand Slams, and she is 0-6 against the top-10 players this year.

The Swiss star is at least set to hold on to her world number one ranking for a little while longer, after her nearest rival Jennifer Capriati lost out to the other Williams sister in the all-American second semi-final.

Saturday’s final will be the first Grand Slam final contested by sisters since Maud Watson beat Lilian Watson in the first Wimbledon women’s final back in 1884.
