Beefing up defence against cyber attacks

The government is reinforcing efforts to protect Switzerland from cyber attacks and has asked experts to present a strategy paper within the next 12 months.

Defence Minister Ueli Maurer said a taskforce would examine possible technical and legal measures to avert attacks on vital computer systems.

He said the cabinet agreed that the protection in place could be improved, particularly cooperation between the different ministries as well with the private sector.

Maurer added that cooperation with other countries was also important.

Switzerland is particularly vulnerable because of its high-tech infrastructure while the danger of attacks is real but hard to foresee according to a defence ministry statement.

The recent publication of secret documents by Wikileaks was a case in point said Maurer.
