NGOs urge more funds to preserve biodiversity

Environmental groups have called on the Swiss government to provide more funds to finance international measures to preserve biological diversity.

The appeal was launched ahead of a United Nations summit on biodiversity in Nagoya, Japan, next week.

The non-governmental organisations, Berne Declaration, Pro Natura and Bird Life, warned that the meeting was doomed if the government failed to increase significantly the Swiss contribution to developing nations in the field of biodiversity.

They added that not enough funds were available to reach the targets in Switzerland by 2020.

Up to $12 billion (SFr11.6 billion) are being spent worldwide on efforts to preserve the biological diversity, but NGOs estimate nearly four times as much is needed to protect existing nature reserves.
