No federal leash for dangerous dogs
Parliament has decided not to introduce federal legislation on dangerous dogs. The Senate on Friday followed the House of Representatives in rejecting the draft law.
The legislation would have included elements such as an obligation for owners of dogs classified as dangerous to hold a license, put a muzzle on their pet in public and keep them on a lead.
A fatal attack by three pitbull terriers on a six-year-old boy in 2005 sparked the debate, which has continued ever since.
Following the parliamentary vote, legislation on dogs will remain the responsibility of each of the country’s 26 cantons.
