Prevention drives against alcohol abuse

Tests to monitor how easily minors can obtain alcohol show a slight drop in illegal sales, the Swiss authorities said on Thursday.

But the federal alcohol board says increased efforts, including nationwide regulations, are needed to crack down on alcohol abuse by teenagers.

In Switzerland the sale of beer and wine is banned for customers under 16 years of age while the age limit for liquor is 18.

The more than 4,500 tests carried out in most regions of the country last year showed that teenagers were able to buy alcohol from shops in about one out of three cases.

The figure is about three per cent down on 2008 according to a statement by the board.

Last month the government announced plans to streamline the alcohol law which dates back to 1932.

In another development, the Lausanne University hospital has launched an online test for people at risk to develop a drinking problem.

Hospital officials said the three-minute test is designed to help the younger generation keep tabs on their alcohol consumption and potential dangers.
