Swiss-Norway relations remain harmonious
Swiss President Doris Leuthard has ended her two day official state visit to Norway at the invitation of King Harald and his wife Sonja.
Leuthard said that the relations between the two countries were as good as ever.
The Swiss President’s visit started with a sour note, when the military band played the Swiss patriotic song “O mein Heimatland” instead of the country’s national anthem.
The patriotic song had been one of the possible anthems in 1961, when the Swiss national anthem changed, but the Swiss Psalm was selected in the end.
Since 1847, trade relations between the two states, neither of which are members of the EU, fall under the European Free Trade Association (Efta) and the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Bilateral trade remains modest – Switzerland is Norway’s 19th largest trade partner.
