Cargo strikers vote to return to work
Striking workers at the cargo unit of Swiss Federal Railways have voted to end a four-week protest over planned job cuts.
The 430 workers voted unanimously to return to work on Wednesday after advice from the strike committee, leaders of the cargo division announced on Monday.
The strike action began on March 7 after Federal Railways announced plans for restructuring and over 400 job cuts at the loss-making unit – 126 of them in Italian-speaking Bellinzona.
The breakthrough follows a meeting on Saturday at which workers, Transport Minister Moritz Leuenberger and representatives of Federal Railways agreed to end the strike, withdraw restructuring plans and hold roundtable talks with all parties.
The strike committee agreed to recommend an end to action as a result, while Leuenberger said Federal Railways would recommend its board of directors withdraw the restructuring plans.
Leuenberger is expected to name a mediator for the roundtable talks in the next few days.
