Have such recommendations ever led to a bad experience for you?
We are working on a story about bias and the data behind content recommendation algorithms. For this reporting, we would like to hear experiences and inputs from our readers.
Actually a good thing to be informed at a glance what I will NOT and never, ever buy.
What is annoying is that renowned Swiss newspapers for which you pay high subscription fees interrupt the mostly clever texts to advertise some nonsense.
I can understand that the media houses need additional income. Then please place the ads on the right margin or at the bottom or somewhere else but not in the middle of an editorial text. I certainly don't read NZZ to buy women's clothes.
Eigentlich eine gute Sache auf einen Blick informiert zu werden was ich NICHT und nie und nimmer kaufen werde.
Was aergert ist, dass renomierte Schweizer Tageszeitungen fuer die man hohe Abo Gebuehren bezahlt die meist gescheiten Texte unterbricht um irgendwelchen Unsinn zu bewerben.
Ich kann verstehen, dass die Medien Haeuser zusaetzliche Einnahmen brauchen. Dann bitte plaziert die Werbung rechts am Rand oder unten oder sonstwo aber nicht mitten in einen redaktionellen Text. Ich lese bestimmt nicht NZZ um Damenkleider zu kaufen
I feel challenged or offended by AI in video games. They may have advantages, but there is a shadow over these algorithms.
I also recently watched a documentary on social media - The Social Dilemma - that confirmed many of my suspicions! These AIs are deliberately devaluing us, triggering complexes, then rewarding us with small successes and keeping us "in line" via this route.
In video games that require skill, these algoithms start to overwhelm us, make a game too hard - bad equipment for example and or too strong enemies with partly unpredictable behaviour etc.. That would be fine, if the AI didn't know exactly about my weaknesses and strengths, my likes and dislikes. So playing becomes pure manipulation. Shortly presented something that seems much too difficult, then following the provoked defeat doubt his own abilities and unfortunately do not recognize that even skill games are associated with a lot of luck and have only limited to do with skill.

Ich fühle mich vorallem durch die KI in Viedeospielen herausgefordert bzw. beleidigt. Sie mögen Vorteile mit sich bringen, aber über diesen Algorithmen liegt ein Schatten.
Vor kurzem sah ich auch eine Doku über Social Media - The Social Dilemma - das hat viele meiner Vermutungen bestätigt! Diese KI entwerten uns bewusst, lösen Komplexe aus, um uns dann durch kleine Erfolge zu belohnen und uns über diesen Weg "bei der Stange" zu halten.
Bei Videospielen die Können erfordern, beginnen diese Algoithmen uns zu überfordern, machen ein Spiel zu schwer - schlechte Ausrüstung z.B. und oder zu starke Gegner mit teils unvorsehbarem Verhalten etc.. Das wäre ja soweit in Ordnung, wenn diese KI nicht genau über meine Schwächen und Stärken, meine Vorlieben und Abneigungen becheid wüsste. So wird das Spielen zur reinsten Manipulation. Kurz etwas präsentiert das einem viel zu schwer erscheint, dann im Anschluss an die provozierte Niederlage an seinen eigenen Fähigkeiten Zweifeln und leider nicht erkennen, dass selbst Skillgames mit viel Glück in Verbindung stehen und mit Können nur noch bedingt zu tun haben.

The funny thing is that the ads I notice the most online are often ads for brands I've decided to boycott. (apple, Zalando) and their ads piss me off to no end so I want their product even less. I like to think that advertising has little effect on me. The only time I think that ads on the internet pushed me to consume their product was for movies, which I then went to see in the cinema. Otherwise in general I know what I want and what is offered by the different suppliers and when I want something new I inquire a lot to find what really corresponds to my need. so I think it has little influence on me. But are we really aware of the tricks the advertisers use to get our money? I don't know.
Ce qui est marrant c'est que les pub que je remarque le plus en ligne sont souvent les pub pour des marques que j'ai décidé de boycotter. (apple, Zalando) et leur pub m'énérve au plus haut point et donc j'ai encore moins envie de leur produit. J'aime penser que la pub a peu d'effet sur moi. Les seul fois ou je pense que des pub sur internet mon poussé a consommer leur produit, c'étais pour des films, que je suis ensuite allé voir au cinéma. Sinon de manière général je sais ce que je veux et qu'est-ce qui est proposé par les différent fournisseur et quand je veux quelque chose de nouveau je me renseigne beaucoup pour trouver ce qui correspond vraiment a mon besoin. donc je crois que sa a peu d'influence sur moi. Mais sommes nous vraiment conscient des astuce que les publicitaire mettent en place pour nous soutirer notre argent? je ne sais pas.
Who has not experienced that in a forum or media platform his contribution was censored by an algorithm? In one case, discussions about the city of Troy and the Trojan horse were censored. And this was because apparently someone from a different cultural background where the word is used to describe a cheap prostitute was put on the censor list.
Bottom line: algorithms can make it difficult or even impossible for people to exchange ideas.
This is actually a violation of Article 19 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights. Algorithms can violate human rights.
And if you consider how angry some people are about this censorship, algorithms, especially non-transparent algorithms, can generate anger and hatred.
This is not surprising when you consider that algorithms are ultimately programmed by humans. Algorithms only reflect the world view of the programmers and today more and more the world view of the investors and do not represent reality. And the more these people come from a foreign culture or today even from a different social class, the more alienating algorithms are.
That there can be different views between social classes was seen some time ago in the court ruling on "Like it". For a judge, a like-it on a comment means that you fully agree with what is written. And therefore you are not allowed to give a like-it if you only agree with a part of the text. You are also not allowed to give a Like-it to those who hardly received one as a "social reason". One should also no longer give such a Like-it to the commentators who received less Like-it than the protagonists in order to "compensate". One should also no longer give a Like-it for an original pseudonym. Likewise, one may no longer give a Like-it because one is simply happy that someone is online again.
If you would write algorithm with the judge's point of view, some people would get the label schizophrenic.
Regarding recommendations, some algorithms are simply useless. For example, there is a public search platform for suppliers and service providers. And although you say there that you only want suppliers from Switzerland, suppliers from Germany are listed first and then at the bottom a few suppliers from Switzerland!
Similar is the behavior of a well-known search engine. In former times the search engine was comparable with a haystack. If one entered a search term then one received very many search results, only most had nothing to do with the searched term, not even the search term appeared in the text of the homepage which was listed as result. One useful search result was a lucky hit. Then the algorithm was changed and the search engine was a great treasure trove for a while. Only the search algorithm was changed again so that today you can't find much with the same search term.
Algorithms can therefore scare people away and keep them off the Internet. And that is in some cases alarming. So those who think the same way can be made to believe that the whole world thinks the way they do and that there are no dissenters. And that can lead over time to a creeping radicalization of the general public so that non-radicals are perceived by the general public as radical.
Wer hat es noch nicht erlebt, dass in einem Forum oder Medienplattform sein Beitrag von einem Algorithmus zensuriert wurde? In einem Fall wurden Diskussionen über die Stadt Troja und das trojanische Pferd zensuriert. Und dies weil scheinbar jemand mit einem anderen kulturellen Hintergrund, wo das Wort für eine billige Prostituierte verwendet wird, auf die Zensurliste setzte.
Fazit: Algorithmen können den Austausch unter Menschen erschweren oder gar verunmöglichen.
Dies ist eigentlich ein Verstoss gegen Artikel 19 der UNO Menschenrechtserklärung. Algorithmen können gegen die Menschenrechte verstossen.
Und wenn man bedenkt wie sich dann manche über diese Zensur ärgerten, dann können Algorithmen insbesondere intransparente Algorithmen Wut und Hass generieren.
Dies ist nicht weiter verwunderlich wenn man bedenkt dass Algorithmen letztendlich von Menschen programmiert wurden. Algorithmen geben nur das Weltbild der Programmierer und heute mehr und mehr das Weltbild der Investoren wieder und bilden nicht Realität ab. Und umso mehr diese Menschen aus einer fremden Kultur oder heute auch nur aus einer anderen Gesellschaftsschicht kommen, umso mehr sind Algorithmen befremdend.
Dass es zwischen Gesellschaftsschichten unterschiedlich Sichtweisen geben kann sah man vor einiger Zeit beim Gerichtsurteil über "Like it". Für einen Richter bedeutet ein Like-it bei einem Kommentar dass man voll und ganz dem Geschriebenen zustimmt. Und somit dürfte man nicht mehr ein Like-it geben wenn man nur einem Teil des Textes zu stimmt. Man darf auch nicht mehr als "sozialen Gründen" denjenigen, die kaum ein Like-it erhielten, solch eines geben. Man dürfte auch nicht mehr zum "Ausgleichen" den Kommentatoren, die weniger Like-it erhielten als die Protagonisten, solch eines geben. Man dürfte auch nicht mehr ein Like-it geben für ein originelles Pseudonym. Ebenso darf man auch kein Like-it mehr geben weil man sich einfach freut dass da jemand wieder mal online ist.
Würde man Algorithmus mit der Sichtweise des Richters schreiben, so würden wohl somanche Menschen das Label schizophren erhalten.
Betreffend Empfehlungen sind manche Algorithmen einfach unbrauchbar. So gibt es eine öffentliche Suchplattform für Lieferanten und Dienstleistungsanbieter. Und obwohl man dort sagt, dass man nur Anbieter aus der Schweiz haben möchte werden zuerst Anbeiter aus Deutschland aufgelistet und ganz unten dann ein paar Anbieter aus der Schweiz!
Ähnlich ist das Verhalten einer bekannten Suchmaschine. Früher war die Suchmaschine vergleichbar mit einem Heuhaufen. Wenn man einen Suchbegriff eingab dann erhielt man sehr viele Suchergebnisse, nur die meisten hatten mit dem gesuchten Begriff nichts zu tun, nicht einmal der Suchbegriff kam im Text der Homepage vor die als Ergebnis aufgeführt wurde. Ein nützliches Suchergebnis war ein Glückstreffer. Dann wurde der Algorithmus geändert und die Suchmaschine war eine Zeit lang eine tolle Fundgrube. Nur wurde der Suchalgorithmus wieder geändert so dass man heute mit dem selben Suchbegriff vieles nicht mehr findet.
Algorithmen können daher Menschen vergraueln und von Internet fern halten. Und das ist in manchen Fällen bedenklich. So kann derjenigen, die gleich Denken vorgespielt dass die ganze Welt so denkt wie sie und es keine Andersdenkende gibt. Und das kann mit der Zeit zu einer schleichenden Radikalisierung der Allgemeinheit führen so dass nicht-Radikale von der Allgemeinheit als radikal wahrgenommen werden.
I like the recommendations a lot.
About half of the products I buy on Amazon and Zalando are based on the suggestions the sites give. I like them. Almost every time it is useful to know what products are people bought at the same time. Most of the time I do not think of those connections and the products helped me a lot.
Me and my sisters do the same. Zalando has very good match tips. I like their outfit recommendations a lot.
I agree. I usually buy what is recommended as suggested items on Amazon and Zalando. They suggest useful items like extra spare parts or other things that usually go together well.
I also trust and like the Zalando and Amazon recommendations. They suggest elegant outfits and good product mixes.
Well, this various algorithms do annoy me. I don't really like seeing ads, so I have a lot of plugins installed on my browser to block ads or cookies, but they still slip through the cracks. Also I spend money on some shopping sites and am actually very strong on seeing a wide variety of items, but based on the algorithms, the recommended items are often based on items I've bought, so they are often things that are similar to what I've bought, and how can I possibly buy them again when I've already bought them. So sometimes I wonder if these algorithms are a bit retarded.

Sometimes i pay attention as they are hilarious one done on YouTube by swiss confederation parties, other than that i don't watch ads, i use add lock or pay for adds to be blocked by the platform. I don't use Facebook and for news go to news from proper need makers. I don't see how adds could affect me if i don't watch any, of and i don't use cable tv, only Netflix and Netflix does not have adds.
Not at all. I only browse sites that work with ad-blockers and the moment any company sends me advertising I notify them to stop or I will no longer be their client. I did that with internet, mobile, banking or my medical insurance. The TV service forced ads on me so I stopped using any TV service.
They don't. I block any on social media, or hide them. I record all my TV programs so I can skip through the ads. I have never followed fashion or got the latest car/phone/anything. I have most things that I need and make them last. The rest I'll get when I am ready. But the scary thing - if I chat on e.g. skype about something, a few days later an advert for it pops up on my news pages, social media, etc. Big brother (or Big sister) is watching, all the time.
Online advertising just annoys me, so I try to eliminate it as soon as possible. I find that the continuous growth of it is making it difficult to enjoy what you really want to see or hear. Last but not least, the frequent commercial interruptions on Youtube and other things, are even obnoxious to me.

Infine ma non per ultimo, le frequenti interruzioni pubblicitarie su Youtube e altro, mi risultano addirittura odiose.

For my part, ads and commercials are very useful. Indeed, they pay for all or a lot of the content that we really want to see. With several browsers you can block ads on the internet but this may not be a good idea. Eventually, the site could no longer function correctly. To avoid this, you regularly click on an ad to be opened in a new tab and then simply close it. On TV, time-shift viewing allows you to press the fast forward key to get quickly beyond the commercials. Advertising is only interesting for new products. Even after the twentieth time, there is still no need for a remedy against constipation or a razor when your digestion works OK and you already have bought a new one...
To a great extent of course.. I believe it is progressing towards impact. In terms of experience, I find that positive experiences are more than negative ones.
