The Swiss authorities have since officially recognised them as a national minority. In 2001 the cabinet insisted that all Jenish and Sintis communities were recognised, whether they pursued nomadic lifestyles or not.
An estimated 35,000 Jenish and Sintis people live in Switzerland; most of them have settled down. Between 3,000 and 5,000 are still always or partly travelling.
